Live for Today - There are No Guarantees on Tomorrow

I have been reflecting on life lately and I was thinking about how many moments I missed because I was focused on chaos. I get caught up in life at times and have to stop and breathe. When I taught students with Autism, I did a lot of life skill lessons. I used to give them visual reminders with settling strategies or reminders on them.
Sometimes I need a visual to remember:
Not to take myself too seriously. When I do I lose sight of things. Working in the field it is easy to take things to seriously and the truth is as long as these kids are having fun, that is all that matters.
The second thing is remembering what life is all about. For me it is to remember that it is not always all about me, about what I want or what I am missing. I live life to the fullest and the things that make me truly happy are simple things like seeing the light in a child’s eyes or having a cup of coffee with my mom. These may seem silly to some but when I am not all caught up in what I want and what I don’t have, I can experience true happiness. I need to remain grateful.
The last one is stay in the moment….which to me means, enjoy what ever it is I am doing in that moment and treasure the company I keep because time waits for no one.
I try not to take people, places or things for granted because we only have one life. We have to live for today because we might not be here for tomorrow. I enjoy life and everything in it. I enjoy my work and on the weekends when the house is filled with children, I go in and I enjoy them. I smile because I am so blessed to be able to see God in each and every one of them. I truly feel that we are all God’s kids, my kids at HOPe are just God’s extra special ones and I am grateful to be a part of that.
Do you need a visual reminder to live for today or will you allow yourself to get caught up in the chaos?
